The Royal Society has been receiving ‘a lot of good feedback’ from its industry fellows and entrepreneurs in residence (EiRs) about a Novaro title on how to maximize the value in start-ups. The world’s most august scientific institution started running a programme in the spring of 2018 to place cohorts of experienced entrepreneurs in university departments around the UK to accelerate the transfer of technology and the growth of new ventures. Nineteen individuals made up the first wave and similar numbers have joined the second and third waves. Dr Harry Alexander, senior industry programme officer at The Royal Society, ran a networking event for its EiRs and industry fellows in November 2019 and decided to distribute the Novaro title to everyone. Its author, Dr Adrian Burden, was one of the first EiRs appointed and he has been on a one-day-a-week secondment in the School of Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham since April 2018. He was originally an academic scientist himself who co-founded, grew and later exited an advanced materials venture in Singapore for several million. His book is written as an entrepreneur’s guide to creating a winning formula for investors, building an operation that can scale and negotiating the best deals for the business. For Luke Johnson, chair of Risk Capital Partners LLP, the book is: ‘an ideal manual for ambitious entrepreneurs … it is a comprehensive, easy-to-use reference for aspiring tycoons’. At Enterprise Nation, Emma Jones says: ‘Read this book before you start. Sound principles and strong advice on building a successful and exit-able business.’

Adrian Burden's book, 'Start to Exit: How to maximise the value of your start-up' was published by Novaro, October 2017. See here for further details.
